Vein & Venous Care in New Jersey

Diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and blood clots — including same-day venous ablation. Offered by Dr. Sankalp Pathak, MD, FACC.

What Is Venous Insufficiency?

Healthy leg veins carry blood upward against gravity using one-way valves. In chronic venous insufficiency, those valves weaken and blood pools in the legs — causing swelling, aching, heaviness, varicose veins, and over time, skin changes near the ankles. It's a common, progressive condition, and modern treatment is quick and minimally invasive. Catching it early can prevent more serious complications like skin breakdown and ulcers.

Treatments We Offer

Venous Ablation

Endovenous ablation is the modern, minimally invasive treatment for venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Using radiofrequency or laser energy delivered through a thin catheter, the diseased vein is gently closed so blood reroutes to healthy veins. It's an outpatient procedure done with local anesthesia — most patients walk out the same day and return to normal activity within a day or two.

Varicose Vein & Venous Insufficiency Treatment

Beyond ablation, treatment may include compression therapy, lifestyle measures, and other minimally invasive techniques to relieve symptoms, improve circulation, and address the appearance and discomfort of varicose veins.

Blood Clot & DVT Management

Dr. Pathak diagnoses and treats deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg. Care ranges from blood-thinning medication to minimally invasive, catheter-based clot removal when appropriate, to restore blood flow and reduce the risk of complications such as a clot traveling to the lungs.

Why You Might Need Treatment

It may be worth an evaluation if you have:

  • Visible varicose or bulging veins
  • Leg swelling, aching, heaviness, or fatigue — often worse at day's end
  • Restless legs or night cramps
  • Skin discoloration, itching, or changes near the ankles
  • A slow-healing leg or ankle sore
  • Sudden leg pain, warmth, or swelling that could signal a clot

What to Expect

Before

Your visit starts with an evaluation and a vein ultrasound to map circulation and pinpoint which veins are affected. Dr. Pathak then reviews the findings and recommends the right approach for you.

During

Venous ablation is performed in the office or an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. Through a tiny catheter, energy is applied to seal the diseased vein. The procedure typically takes under an hour, and you're awake and comfortable throughout.

After

Most patients walk immediately afterward and resume everyday activity within a day or two, often wearing compression stockings for a short period. Dr. Pathak reviews your aftercare and any follow-up at your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is venous ablation surgery?

No. Venous ablation is a minimally invasive, catheter-based outpatient procedure that closes a diseased vein using heat energy. There is no major incision, and most patients walk out the same day and return to normal activity quickly.

What are the signs of venous insufficiency?

Common signs include leg swelling, aching or heaviness, varicose veins, restless legs, skin discoloration near the ankles, and in advanced cases, slow-healing sores. These happen when weakened vein valves let blood pool in the legs.

Is a blood clot (DVT) dangerous?

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be serious because a clot may travel to the lungs. Prompt evaluation matters. Treatment ranges from blood-thinning medication to minimally invasive catheter-based clot removal, depending on the situation.

Will insurance cover varicose vein treatment?

When varicose veins or venous insufficiency cause symptoms such as pain, swelling, or skin changes, treatment is often covered by insurance. Purely cosmetic treatment usually is not. Call the office to confirm your coverage.
